## What's the difference between One Clear Reader and Obsidian?

**Obsidian** is a note-taking app built on plain Markdown files. You point it at a folder, which it calls a **vault**, and it turns that folder into a connected library with links between notes, a graph of how ideas relate, and thousands of community plugins ([Obsidian](https://obsidian.md/), checked 27 September 2026). The app is free.

**One Clear Reader** is a Mac app for reading, reviewing and lightly editing documents, especially the ones AI tools create. It doesn't ask you to organize anything. It opens the file you point it at, wherever it is, and shows it as a formatted page.

If Obsidian is a library you build over years, One Clear Reader is a good reading lamp you can point at anything on your desk.

## Doesn't Obsidian already show Markdown files formatted?

Obsidian already shows Markdown files formatted, but it is built around files in your vault. Inside the vault it draws diagrams and tables and lets you edit them. For your own notes, using Obsidian as your reader makes sense.

The catch is the vault. As one developer put it, "opening a markdown file that did not live in a vault wasn't possible." Obsidian's help describes working inside a vault, and we found no way in its docs to open one loose file without one. AI files rarely land in your vault. They land in Downloads, a project folder, `/tmp` or `~/.claude/plans`.

So the honest answer: Obsidian does this for files you've moved into it. One Clear Reader does it for files wherever the AI left them, and adds the review steps Obsidian doesn't list: notes you send back to the AI, and a view of what changed.

## When is Obsidian the better choice?

Obsidian beats One Clear Reader when you're building a linked notes collection, want to customize everything, need your notes on other devices, want a free app, or need footnotes and image files.

### You're building a second brain

If you want every meeting note, idea and reading summary in one place, linked together, Obsidian is one of the best tools there is. Links between notes and the graph view help you see connections you'd otherwise miss. One Clear Reader has none of that, and isn't trying to.

### You want to customize everything

Obsidian has thousands of community plugins and an open API, so you can shape it around the way you work. If you enjoy tuning your tools, it gives you an enormous amount of room.

### You need your notes on your phone, or on Windows

Obsidian runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, with optional paid Sync, which is end-to-end encrypted. One Clear Reader is Mac only, and the current build runs on Apple silicon Macs only.

### You want it free, with no catch

The core Obsidian app costs nothing, for personal or work use. A $50 a year commercial license exists, but Obsidian says it isn't required ([Obsidian pricing](https://obsidian.md/pricing)). If all you need is a free place to read and write your own Markdown, Obsidian is hard to argue with.

### You need footnotes or image files

Obsidian handles footnotes and opens image files in your vault. One Clear Reader does neither yet: footnotes show as plain text, and image files don't open on their own.

## When is One Clear Reader the better choice?

One Clear Reader beats Obsidian when your AI files are scattered across your Mac, you review them and send notes back, you open more than Markdown, or you want reading settings ready to go.

### Your AI files are scattered

AI tools don't save into your vault unless you set them up to. Claude.ai downloads go to Downloads. Claude Code and Codex write into whatever folder they're running in. Some agents write into `/tmp`. To read those in Obsidian, you'd move or copy each file into your vault first, or open that folder as a new vault. In One Clear Reader you press ⌘L, paste the path and press Return. It cleans up quotes, backticks, `~/` and a `:142` line number for you. If you only remember part of the name, type it in the same box. It uses Spotlight to search your home folder and iCloud Drive.

Spotlight skips `/tmp` and `~/.claude`. For those, the **Latest from your AI** list on the welcome screen shows documents changed in the last 24 hours, newest first, and it checks those folders too.

### You want to tell the AI what to fix

Select some words in the page, press ⌥⌘N and type a note. Add as many as you need (3 a document on Free, no limit on Pro). Then **Copy as prompt** copies one message with the file path, every quote and every note, ready to paste back into Claude or Codex. In Obsidian you'd type `==highlights==` and `%%comments%%` into the note itself, which changes the file you're reviewing. We didn't find a way in its docs to gather those into one prompt.

### You want to see what the AI changed

When the file changes, One Clear Reader reloads the page and says how many sections are new or changed since the last refresh, with a button to jump to each one. That part is free. With Pro, **Changed since your last visit** marks what's different since you last read the file, even if that was last week. Obsidian's File recovery can show changes between its saved snapshots. That works, but you go looking for it.

### You don't want to maintain a system

Obsidian rewards people who invest in it. If you just want to read the plan Claude wrote and move on, a vault, folders and plugins are more than you need.

### You read more than Markdown

One Clear Reader opens PDFs in their original layout, EPUB books, web pages with their scripts switched off, CSV files as a sortable table, and Word files with their real headings. All outside any vault.

Word files get special care. With Pro you can change the words in place and it stays a Word file, with a backup kept before each save. On Free, **Edit a copy as Markdown** makes a .md beside it and leaves the Word file alone. When someone asks for a Word doc back, **Save as Word** (Pro) builds one from any Markdown file.

### Long AI text wears you out

The free reading profiles are ready to go. **Neuro-friendly** uses Atkinson Hyperlegible with extra spacing and a cream page. **Paragraph Focus** dims everything except one paragraph. **Large Print** does what it says. In Obsidian you'd build the same thing yourself with themes and CSS snippets.

## How do you use One Clear Reader and Obsidian together?

One Clear Reader and Obsidian work well side by side, because both use ordinary Markdown files.

1. **Read first in One Clear Reader.** When an AI hands you a file, open it in One Clear Reader to see it formatted, add notes, and decide whether it's worth keeping.
2. **Keep the good ones in Obsidian.** Move the files you want to keep into your vault. They're already Markdown, so nothing needs converting.
3. **Point your AI at your vault, carefully.** If you want Claude Code or Cursor to write straight into your vault, give it one subfolder, like `Vault/AI Inbox`, so it doesn't touch your other notes.

Obsidian's own extras, like `[[links]]` between notes, are built for Obsidian. One Clear Reader doesn't list support for them, so read those notes in Obsidian.
