> [!answer] One Clear Reader opens .docx Word files as clean, readable pages with their headings and pictures, on every plan. To change the words inside the Word file itself, press ⌘E (Pro), edit, and click **Save N changes**. A backup is kept first. On Free, choose **Edit a copy as Markdown** to edit a .md copy while the Word file stays untouched.

## How do I open a Word file in One Clear Reader?

One Clear Reader opens a Word file the same way as any other file: double-click it and choose One Clear Reader under **Open With**, drag it onto the app, paste its path with ⌘L, or pick it with ⌘O. See [getting started](/help/getting-started) for every way.

One Clear Reader converts the .docx for reading using a tool built into macOS. Real Word headings (Heading 1 to 6) stay headings, so they show in the **On this page** outline. Pictures show in place. Word files up to 100 MB open.

Reading a Word file never changes it.

## Which way of editing a Word file should I use?

The right way to edit a Word file in One Clear Reader depends on your plan and on what you want to keep. This table compares the two.

| | Edit this Word file (Pro) | Edit a copy as Markdown (Free) |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | The words inside the original .docx | A new .md file saved beside it |
| The Word file | Updated, with a backup kept first | Never touched |
| Layout, fonts, headers and footers | Kept exactly | Not carried over. You get plain Markdown |
| New paragraphs, bold, italic | Not possible here | Anything goes |
| Best for | Fixing wording in a file that goes back to someone in Word | Reworking the text, or handing it to your AI |

## How do I edit a Word file in One Clear Reader?

To edit the Word file itself, use **Edit this Word file** (Pro) in One Clear Reader.

1. Open the .docx and press ⌘E, or click **Edit**, or choose **Edit this Word file** in ⌘K.
2. A bar appears: "Editing the Word file". Locked paragraphs are marked on the page.
3. Click into any unlocked paragraph or table cell and change the words.
4. To change a paragraph's style, use the style menu in the bar, or the keys below.
5. Click **Save 3 changes** (the number counts changed paragraphs), or press ⌘S.

The status line tells you what's happening: "3 paragraphs changed. Everything else in the file stays as it is."

To stop without saving, click **Cancel** or press Esc.

## Which Word paragraph styles can I use in One Clear Reader?

One Clear Reader offers these paragraph styles (Pro), if the Word file defines them:

| Style | Key |
|---|---|
| **Normal text** | ⌥⌘0 |
| **Heading 1** | ⌥⌘1 |
| **Heading 2** | ⌥⌘2 |
| **Heading 3** | ⌥⌘3 |
| **Heading 4** | ⌥⌘4 |
| **Title** | menu only |
| **Quote** | menu only |

If the file doesn't have one of these styles, it isn't offered. A paragraph using some other style shows as **Other style**.

## What can't I change in a Word file in One Clear Reader?

One Clear Reader locks some parts of a Word file so nothing in the file breaks. A locked paragraph is labeled on the page, for example "Locked · a footnote" or "Picture · change it in Word".

Paragraphs are locked when they hold:

- a picture or an embedded object
- a field, like a page number or a link
- a footnote or an endnote
- a comment
- a content control
- an equation, a shape or a text box
- hidden text, symbols or other special Word content

There are also a few limits on every paragraph:

- **No new paragraphs.** Return is blocked. Add paragraphs in Word, or use Edit a copy.
- **No bold or italic switching.** Existing formatting stays, but you can't turn it on or off here.
- **Paste is plain text.** Formatting from what you copied is dropped.

> [!scribble] words, yes. layout, leave it to Word.

## Why is my Word file read-only in One Clear Reader?

Some Word files can't be edited safely, so One Clear Reader keeps the whole file read-only and tells you why:

| The file has | What to do |
|---|---|
| Tracked changes | Accept or reject them in Word first, or use Edit a copy |
| Comments | Editing could move comments away from their words. Use Word, or Edit a copy |
| Protection against editing | Remove it in Word, or use Edit a copy |
| It's open in Word right now | Close it in Word, then edit it here |

## What happens when I save a Word file in One Clear Reader?

One Clear Reader saves a Word file carefully, because Word files are fussy.

1. It works on a copy. The original isn't touched yet.
2. Only the paragraphs you changed are rewritten. Headers, footers, styles and everything else stay byte for byte.
3. It checks the edited copy opens as a proper document.
4. It saves a backup of the original.
5. Only then does it swap the new file in.

If any step fails, you see "Not saved" and the Word file is left exactly as it was.

## Where does One Clear Reader keep Word backups?

One Clear Reader keeps Word backups in a folder on your Mac:

`~/Library/Application Support/One Clear Reader/Word backups`

(`~` means your home folder. Library is hidden in Finder by default.)

The easy way there: press ⌘K and choose **Show Word backups in Finder** (Pro). Each backup is named after the file and the time, like `Report 2026-09-28 142233.docx`. The newest 20 are kept for each file name. Older ones are removed.

To go back to an earlier version, copy the backup you want out of that folder in Finder, rename it to match the original, and put it where the original was.

## How do I edit a Word file on One Clear Reader's free plan?

On One Clear Reader's free plan, use **Edit a copy as Markdown**.

1. Open the .docx and click **Edit a copy** (on Free the Edit button says this), or choose **Edit a copy as Markdown** in ⌘K.
2. A save window titled **Edit a Copy** opens next to the Word file, with a .md name filled in. Click **Save and Edit**.
3. The copy opens, ready to edit. The pictures go into a folder beside it, named after the file with `_files` on the end, like `Report_files`.

The Word file is never changed. When you're done, you have a Markdown file you can edit freely, give to your AI, or turn back into Word with **Save as Word** (Pro). See [export and share](/help/export-and-share).

You can also use this route on Pro, whenever you want to change more than the words. Click **Edit a copy instead** in the Word editing bar.
